Are eggs acceptable to the ethic of BWC?
No, ethically eggs are unacceptable to BWC. We do not recommend any consumer item that uses egg in its manufacture.
Does BWC consider milk acceptable to its ethic?
While BWC recognizes the harm done to animals in the dairy industry and therefore promotes and encourages veganism, it does not yet accord to itself the status of a vegan organization. However, many of our members and some of our trustees are vegans. We also list food and cosmetic items under two separate categories: vegetarian and vegan (products not using milk, honey, silk and wool) to enable people to make their own choice.
I wish to do something for the stray animals in my area. How can BWC help me?
BWC is a specialist NGO. It works for the commercial exploitation of animals only. It therefore does not have a program for dealing with stray animals. While we encourage neutering the animals and a no-kill animal birth control program, our constitution does not include work for stray animals. We would therefore gladly put you in touch with relevant organizations who do work for stray dogs, cattle, etc.
There are butcher shops in my lane. Isn't there something we can do?
Yes, legal action can be taken against them since they are all unauthorized and illegal. (Slaughter can only take place in designated places.) However, knowing the situation of corruption and connivance between the law enforcement authorities and the law breakers, such an action might not be effective or advisable and we would like to warn people against taking rash steps that could invite physical retaliation resulting in harm. However, for the record, the action that may be taken is as follows: give a complaint in writing to the local municipal authorities about possible encroachment by the butcher and conducting of unlicensed activity, and asking them to remove the structure and get the business stopped. For security reasons make sure that such a petition is signed by a group and not you as an individual.
Is Ajinomoto free from animal substances?
Ajinomoto is a Japanese product made from fish hydrolysate. It is similar to the readily available Mono-Sodium Glutamate (MSG) which is made from sugar beet pulp and wheat gluten and is free from animal substances. Chemically MSG is considered harmful if consumed in large quantities. It is used in place of Ajinomoto. In India the word Ajinomoto and its variations are used as a brand name by some manufacturers of MSG.
Does BWC supply brand names of agarbattis, detergents, etc that do not use any animal substances and have not been tested by means of experiments upon animals?
Sorry, we are still working on these but have not succeeded in obtaining any positive responses from any agarbatti or detergent manufacturers yet.
Do all soaps use animal tallow?
No, all soaps do not use animal tallow/fat. Soaps can be made from vegetable oils and brand names of several such soaps are listed in BWC’s Veg Shopper’s Guide.
Can we have a list of brand names of non-animal derived consumer items?
At BWC, we constantly try to look for consumer items free from animal substances. We have such a list of brand names of products available. It is entitled Veg Shopper’s Guide and is given to all our members.
Do you market ahinsak products? Do you manufacture your own brand of products? Is there any shop where you sell your products?
We do not manufacture or market any products. We only conduct market research to find out and certify products to be free of animal influence in terms of ingredients and testing and publish a list of these products. We recommend using only products included in the Veg Shopper’s Guide.
