As an investment into the future of our children and the well-being of animals twenty years from now (when our children become decision-makers), Beauty Without Cruelty has launched a massive educational effort in the city of Mumbai. The target of the project is to reach each and every school-whichever medium and whichever area-and expose them to some of the animal-exploitation in human society. Besides awareness-raising and individual reform, another goal is to get schools to adopt animal-friendly policies and make a concrete difference in the market for animal-exploitative goods.

Lack of awareness among people of the cruelty involved in some of the lifestyle choices we make
Increased exposure of children to non-vegetarian foods and articles
Complete absence of the value of kindness to animals and respect for other life in the formal curricula of schools
Children falling prey to undesirable influences developing cruel streaks in them
Schools as drivers of the demand for animal-derived goods, e.g. , leather belts and shoes, hair brushes, non-vegetarian food, biology lab dissection

Difficulty in changing the hardened and well-set minds of adults

Every year, on an ongoing basis, to cover each and every school of Mumbai, whether private or govt, and whatever the medium of instruction, in an awareness-raising drive regarding kindness to animals. To expose as many children as we can to the origin of non-vegetarian substances.
To have school managements adopt animal-friendly policies in the matter of uniform, stationery used, food served (if any), laboratory practices, etc .

Visiting schools, giving the children of classes 7-10 an entertaining, educational audio-visual presentation on the topic, administering a quiz for which the winners get symbolic rewards,
Education through Information + Entertainment: The mode of awareness-raising is an educative-cum-entertaining presentations of the cause designed and developed in-house by us on PowerPoint keeping in mind the special mental makeup of children. The program incorporates many video clippings from our own film showing the way animal-products are made.
Formation of ' BWC Kids' clubs : Clubs to be formed at every school/college for interested students to carry out activities for animals around the year in their spare time or in school-allocated time. This would provide them an outlet for their interests under our guidance and make for a sustainable interaction between BWC and the school. Regular (monthly/quarterly) gatherings with the school's BWC Club would be held to chart out activities and annual events.
Obtaining schools' commitments. The school would be urged to make a commitment to the cause by joining BWC 's 'Life Reverent' program under which it would be expected of the school to adopt animal-friendly policies ( i.e. , those that are not exploitative of animals, however unknowingly, unintentionally, or indirectly) in as many areas as possible, e.g. , uniform (leather shoes), curricula (dissection in biology labs), meals.. This is perhaps the most impactful step in the whole program since it converts talk into action. Those that agree would be honoured by inclusion in an exclusive and well-publicised list and with return commitments from BWC in terms of help in identifying non-animal alternatives, providing services of interest to students, e.g. , Nature walks, visits to sanctuaries, posters for the school walls, etc ..
  Problems encountered
Unco-operative principals at certain schools refused to let us present to students since they felt that our activity would be using up valuable study time.
Principals at a few schools were not in agreement with BWC 's Life Reverent Program since they felt that parents would oppose a sudden change in school regulations like uniform etc .

Difficulties in obtaining appointments with principals proved to be the first of our hurdles. Restrictions like office timings and busy schedules were the root cause behind delays.

Schools are usually very busy in the second term. With teachers trying to keep up with deadlines for completing the syllabus and various school functions being held around this time we found it very difficult to organize our programs at a regular frequency.
Last minute technical glitches like computer-projector incompatibility, bad sound quality bad other fall outs lead to last minute panic. The only way to avoid these problems was to make visits to the schools prior to the actual event and make mock presentations to rule out all possibilities of last minute glitches.

Many schools we visited do not have the capacity to assemble one entire standard of students per session. But since we wanted to reach out to as many students as possible, we had to hold 2 to 3 sessions in one day, despite space constrain.

Some schools are do not have audio visual equipment of their own due to which we had to hire the equipment from outside sources. This in turn ended up escalating our campaign costs.
